The great economist Thomas Sowell—I almost wrote, “The great African American economist”, the implication being that his race was at least in part the reason for his greatness. Let’s keep it simple, he's one of the most influential figures in American politics. Why?--because no one has written with greater clarity and wisdom regarding politics and economics than this man.
His work has transformed more former liberals into conservatives than anyone I can think of, including myself. Having said that, I’m troubled by the link between mindless, talk-radio conservatism and the thoughtful commentary of people like Sowell, It’s a tenuous connection at best. His books, The Vision of the anointed and The Economics and Politics of Race are among the best modern books written on the subject, as are a long list of other books written by the man. Check him out!
