James Booker was a pianist deeply rooted in the blues, but one whose natural virtuosity and eclecticism went well beyond the confines of any single tradition. He was also a fine expressive vocalist, with an inherent soulfulness that made everything that he played and sang sound as though he had lived it...and he probably had.
