The Donald and The Debate
What is Donald J.Trump's real motive for not participating in tonight's debate? I have no idea, but I'll fathom a guess anyway.
Trump's presence in these debates has driven ratings through the roof. Nobody denies this, not even Trump haters. I think he's savvy enough to know that if he doesn't show up and the debate's ratings tank, as the result, he can say "You see, without me, the rest of the GOP candidates are a bunch of nobodies that no one cares about," which will only bolster his status as the man that can get the job done.
If the ratings remain reasonably high, he can stand on principal, with very little real damage done to his candidacy. It's a gamble, but the odds are actually in The Donald's favor. You don't get to be a multi-billionaire real estate investor by not understand odds.
I've heard people say that Trump had enormous advantages in the form of a wealthy father who gave him a cool million to invest. That's quite a hand up, no doubt. But, anyone who can negotiate New York's maze of laws and backroom deals, is no one's fool. That's how you turn one million, into ten billion. If Bernie Sanders, for instance, was one tenth as astute as Trump is about core economics, he wouldn't be Bernie Sanders.
Finally, people talk about Trump's followers as dimwitted, but, look no further than Sander's youthful acolytes to see just how uninformed people can really be, even if they are well-intended. In the end, a well-intended fool is still a fool. Maybe Trump's followers are, as well. Any man that can run a presidential campaign without spending or raising billions of dollars, however, would seem to suggest otherwise. I'm just saying.
