Mundi's, a Love Story
There are a lot of restaurant reviews on the internet and in everyone’s local newspapers. The tendency is to review a new, trendy restaurant and give the reader a sense of what the new place has to offer. The reviewer, in effect, does the hard work of trying a place and risking a bad meal in the never-ending search for a rewarding dining experience.
I have no interest in merely duplicating what others do so well. No, I want to tell you about a Dania Beach restaurant that has been around, in one form or another, for many years. Mundi’s is a small Italian restaurant tucked away in the Winn Dixie shopping center across from the Dania Jai-alai Fronton. Despite its ordinary location, this family-owned restaurant is anything but. The food, the service and the ambiance are perfect. Will, his wife, Joyce, his daughter, Yvette, and the fantastic staff prepares everything fresh every day and obsesses over the details.
Will and Joyce originally located Mundi’s in downtown Hollywood, Florida. For years it was a lines-out-the-door kind of place. It was a dream restaurant where the food was great, the service was great, and the place buzzed with a hip vibe that can’t be manufactured. Then, in the middle of the last decade, as downtown Hollywood real estate took off, they lost their lease. For a time, they tried a catering business operated out of the City’s local golf course country club. I won’t say any more about that.
A few years ago, my wife and I were out to dinner on a Friday night and happened to overhear the couple next to us talking about their dinner at Mundi’s the night before. Our ears perked up, we looked at each other and then we asked them, “Did you say Mundi’s?” When they said, “Yes,” we asked them where it was located and, immediately after paying our check, went to the current location to check it out. Hallelujah! Mundi’s was back!
Over the years, this little restaurant, tucked away in a shopping center, has been the site of countless birthday celebrations, wedding parties, family get togethers, holiday parties, etc. Most importantly, it has been the Friday night reward for a long week of hard work. As regulars, we receive great service. However, so do those who are dropping in for the first time.
There are many fine dishes available on the menu and Will is always coming up with a special or two that are fantastic. Most of the time, however, I simply get the spaghetti and sausage with a glass of chardonnay. The meal comes with a great salad, or you may choose to get tomatoes with mozzarella. Instead of spaghetti and sausage, my wife and daughter often enjoy the Zuppa di Mussels and the stuffed tilapia, but we all love the fresh zeppolis, in all their powdered-sugar glory.
Special tip: If you call a day or two ahead, you can get Joyce to make one of her cheesecakes for your party. They are, quite literally, the best cheesecakes I’ve ever eaten anywhere, anytime.
If you want an affordable, good meal, in a romantic location with great service, you can’t beat Mundi’s—a little slice of Italy here in South Florida.
