Laced With Hate
Students at Michigan State campus find a shoelace, which they mistake for a noose. Without hesitation, everyone on campus goes into cataclysm control. Hysteria reigns, as they hunt for the malignant beast responsible for this crime of hate.
Eventually, someone points out that this abomination of racial enmity is just a shoelace. "That's how they're packaged, for convenience sake." cries a lone voice in the wilderness of common sense and rationality.
Now, you can be fairly certain that none of these kids, or their parents, probably not even their grandparents, have ever experienced a real hate crime, real bigotry, but they're sure that hate and bigotry are everywhere, nonetheless. They've been taught that society is incontrovertibly racist, especially American society. Because of White privilege. Which is why just about every person of color, from just about everywhere on earth, would sell their left testicle or ovary, to get in on some of the good ole Ameican hate and migrate here. But, the twain of clear thinking and historical awareness never meet, because logic is not on that twain. Logic abandoned them, long ago, leaving them bereft of genuine historical awareness, except what could be gleaned from a meme, a late-night comedian, maybe a movie, or a cool YouTube video.
Don't get me wrong, bigotry exists, just as stupidity exists. I would never say otherwise. Thankfully, the one is rare. Unfortunately, the other is not. It's alive and well and growing like a weed, conspicuously in places of higher learning.
That's the real hate crime.
Everything else is political theatre.
